Online Obituaries For Garrett County!....GOLD!

The Ruth Enlow Library of Garrett County has posted obituaries scaned from the republican newspaper's microfilmed. Names in the obituary are for Garrett County 1877 to 1902 (as of today)
To register to look at the online REPUBLICAN NEWSPAPER CLICK HERE! This newspaper has been established since 1877 and will have a lot of sources for Garrett County, Maryland there is also a microfilm you can ask for someone to search for you "The majority of our searches for long-distance patrons involve locating obituaries in the local newspaper, The Republican. The Main Library in Oakland owns the full run of this newspaper since its inception in 1877. The staff will search for an obituary when the month and year of death are provided. If you are unsure of the date of death, the staff can search for a name in Garrett County Graves in an attempt to locate that date." Coal Minning
I know that Lee Junkins was a coal miner based off of a census record. I am not sure what Coal mine he worked at! (a neighboring county is Mineral county WV, he could have worked in WV as well.
I have learned that there are four coal mines nearby Kitzmiller one is names Garrett County Coal Minning Company, the other named Hamill Coal and Coke.
The fun things about these two mines is that "To get their coal to the railroad’s loading tipples, the management of the coal companies would use a cable car system, or construct a trestle high above the river"
The railroads used were West Virginia Central and Pittsburgh Railroad.

Indians in Maryland
Bison and Elk migration trails are later used by Native Americans and cover over Garrett County Maryland. Kitzmiller is in Garrett County. This is significant because I think Lee Junkin is related to an indian due to oral stories I have heard about him.
The Start of Kitzmiller & Labor

The Start of Kitzmiller was in 1801 when Thomas Wilson settled in the area and in 1802 built a gristmill. although the town of kitzmiller was not named until 1806.
"the town was named after Ebenezar Kitzmiller. He was the son-in-law of Thomas Wilson ...Years later, Ebinezar opened a woolen mill and the town was eventually given the name Kitzmillersville; later, it was shortened to Kitzmiller." More information CLICK HERE
Lee Junkins was believed to be part indian. This is the only reference I have found stating that Native Americans were in the area.
The website link above states that 1,500 populated the city for logging and mining, but as these events slowed down the population decreased today Kitzmiller is a town consisting of
" Kitzmiller also developed a thriving lumber industry, although its residents also worked in a woolen mill and a shirt factory, as well as in coal mining." To Learn More Click Here
KITZMILLER High School 1927

Kitzmiller was founded in 1906! (I therefore know that Lee Junkins was not born in Kitzmiller like his census says because Kitzmiller was not named yet). Kitzmiller is rich with history.
I would like to document information on Kitzmiller.
The High School had 45 students in 1923 and jumped to 95 in 1927. (I am not sure when the highschool was built or if there was another school before it). Currently, the building is used as an elementary school. IN 1927 it was known as kitzy high.

Junkins lived in Kitzmiller!

The Family History Line I am researching is Vanyla Susan Junkins, B.4 Jan 1907 D. 31 Dec 1974. Her Parents are Lee Junkins B. 5 Aug 1882 D. 6 Nov 1937 and Lula Virginia Baldwin B.1 mar 1881 D. 5 May 1938.
I would first like to document that some of the census records state that a person was born in West Virginia and Maryland. I found out that Kitzmiller, Garrett, MD is on the boarder of Mineral county, WV.
